About Me

I began my practice because I was a failure—I flunked retirement. It was boring, and I found myself talking to the cats for entertainment. That’s why I started V.A. Brown Consulting, bringing together more than 30 years of experience and education across multiple industries.

My background gives me a deep understanding of leadership, management, and organizational dynamics. That perspective, combined with my service as a retired Naval Officer, helps me understand the nuances of government management—and the realities of navigating red tape. As a municipal public servant, I worked at every level, starting as an entry-level employee and rising to department head. Those experiences gave me insight into how cities function from the ground up.

Beyond government, my career has included retail, service, electronics repair, eyewear manufacturing, and higher education. These experiences give me a broad perspective on what it takes to lead effectively in any environment. Along with decades of hands-on leadership, I also hold a Master’s degree in Public Administration, which provides the foundation for the customized workshops, tools, and presentations I design for managers and teams.

Whether your team is across the street or across the nation, I help leaders build confidence, strengthen team relationships, and achieve lasting success.

My Personal Life

Outside of my professional work, I’m an avid hockey fan and a loyal supporter of the San Jose Sharks. I live in San Jose, California, with my wife, Suzanne Ferris, and our two cats, Bacon and Eggs, who keep life entertaining and full of personality.
